To rename a Canadian boat legally, the correct process depends on how the boat is recorded with Transport Canada. For a registered boat, the name change generally requires an official application and approval before the new name becomes part of the government record.
Our online service makes it easier to access and complete the appropriate forms for a change of name and related registry updates, helping boat owners move through the administrative process online.
Transport Canada Rules for Changing a Boat’s Official Name
The legal requirements surrounding a boat name change are connected to Canada’s federal maritime framework. The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 includes provisions addressing the registration of boats, names, certificates, markings, and the maintenance of official records.
A registered boat cannot necessarily be renamed simply by painting a different name on the hull. The official record must reflect the approved change. This helps maintain consistency between the boat’s identifying information and the information held by the appropriate registry.
What Does the Law Say About Boat Names?
The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 addresses the naming of registered boats as part of its provisions governing registration. The law gives the registration system a role in assigning and managing official names rather than leaving every change entirely to an owner’s informal preference.
When you want to rename a Canadian boat legally, it is wise to distinguish between a preferred name and an officially recognized name. A name painted on a boat does not, by itself, necessarily update the federal record.
Depending on the circumstances, an owner may need to address:
- The boat’s current official name
- The proposed new name
- Registry information associated with the boat
- The applicable port of registry
- The information appearing on the current certificate
- Any required application for the requested change
Our service provides online access to the forms used for applicable name-change requests, giving owners a more convenient way to submit the information required for processing.
Choosing a New Name Before Filing
Selecting a new name can be one of the more enjoyable parts of owning a boat, but it should also be approached with the official process in mind. Registered boats are subject to naming requirements, and a proposed name may need to be reviewed before it can become the boat’s recognized name.
Name Availability Can Affect Your Request
Before submitting a request, consider whether your preferred name could conflict with an existing name in the applicable registry. A name that seems original to an owner may already be associated with another registered boat.
When planning to rename a Canadian boat legally, consider preparing alternative name choices in case your first preference cannot be accepted. This can help you think through the request before submitting the applicable form.
Potential considerations include:
- Whether the name is sufficiently distinguishable
- Whether a similar name is already associated with another registered boat
- Whether the proposed spelling could create confusion
- Whether the name is appropriate for the official record
- Whether the boat’s port of registry will remain unchanged
The formal review process is separate from the personal tradition of renaming a boat. Owners may still hold a christening ceremony or celebrate the new name with family and friends, but those traditions do not replace the administrative steps required for an official change.
Using the Correct Form for a Name Change
For eligible registered boats, Transport Canada uses an application specifically associated with changing a boat’s name and, where applicable, changing its port of registry. The original FAQ identifies Form 13, an application used for a change of name and/or transfer of port of registry.
Our service provides the relevant online form so owners can pursue the requested change without needing to navigate a paper-based process on their own.
Information Connected to a Name-Change Request
The form is designed to connect the requested update with the existing government record. Accuracy is valuable because the name change must correspond with the correct boat.
Depending on the applicable process, information may include:
- The current registered name
- The proposed new name
- The official number associated with the boat
- Registry details
- Ownership information
- Information concerning the port of registry, when relevant
When completing an online application to rename a Canadian boat legally, review the information carefully before submission. Small discrepancies can complicate the processing of an administrative request when the information does not match the existing record.
Registered Boats and Other Transport Canada Records
Canadian boat owners should not assume that every boat is recorded in the same way. Transport Canada administers different systems and requirements, and the procedure applicable to one type of record may not apply to another.
For example, a small vessel register entry and a pleasure craft licence are distinct forms of federal boat documentation. Owners should identify the type of record associated with their boat before selecting a process for a name change.
Determine Which Record Applies to Your Boat
The appropriate path can depend on how the boat is currently documented and used. Registration, pleasure craft licencing, and other federal requirements can involve different rules and administrative procedures.
Before proceeding, review details such as:
- Whether the boat is currently registered
- The type of Transport Canada record associated with it
- Whether the boat has an official certificate
- Whether the requested change involves only the name
- Whether a port of registry change is also being requested
This distinction can prevent owners from using an inappropriate process. Our online service offers forms for a range of Canadian boat documentation transactions, allowing users to select the service that corresponds with the update they need.
What Happens After a Name Change Is Processed?
An approved name change can affect more than the wording displayed on the side or transom of a boat. The official record should reflect the current information, and owners may need to ensure that related records are consistent with the approved change.
After you rename a Canadian boat legally, review the information associated with the boat and consider whether other organizations or records should be notified.
Records You May Need to Review
The specific follow-up actions can vary, but owners may wish to check records maintained outside the federal registry process.
These can include:
- Marine insurance records
- Marina or storage agreements
- Radio-related records, where applicable
- Financing or mortgage records
- Private maintenance records
- Emergency contact information
- Other documents that identify the boat by name
Updating these records after the official process is complete can reduce confusion when the boat’s former name appears in older paperwork.
Marking the Boat After an Official Name Change
Once a name change has been accepted through the appropriate process, the boat’s physical markings may also need attention. Federal requirements governing registered boats can address the display of identifying information, including the boat’s name and port of registry. The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 includes provisions relating to marking and registration requirements.
The timing of physical updates should follow the applicable official process rather than assuming that a newly selected name is already approved.
Keep Official and Physical Information Consistent
If the approved name differs from what is currently displayed, the boat’s visible identification should eventually correspond with the official record in accordance with applicable requirements.
Owners should consider:
- Removing or replacing outdated name markings
- Displaying the approved name accurately
- Reviewing applicable marking requirements
- Checking whether the port of registry must also appear
- Using durable materials suitable for the marine environment
- Ensuring that the information matches the official record
When the process involves registered boats, consistency between the boat and its official documentation can help avoid unnecessary confusion.
Can You Change the Port of Registry at the Same Time?
A name-change request may also involve a transfer of the port of registry. These are separate changes that can sometimes be addressed through the same applicable application rather than requiring an owner to treat them as unrelated transactions.
A move, a change in circumstances, or another legitimate administrative reason may lead an owner to consider both updates together.
Review Each Requested Change Carefully
If you want to change both the name and port information, make sure the requested updates accurately reflect your intentions.
Consider whether you are requesting:
- Only a new name
- Only a port-related update
- Both changes together
Combining requests where the applicable form permits can make sense, but owners should not assume that every change automatically occurs simply because another update has been requested.
Our service provides online forms for name changes and other Canadian boat documentation transactions, allowing owners to access the appropriate application for the service they need.
Common Mistakes to Avoid During a Boat Name Change
An administrative request can be delayed when the information submitted does not correspond with the existing record or when an owner treats an official name change as purely cosmetic.
One common mistake is changing the physical lettering before confirming the status of the official request. Another is overlooking the distinction between different types of Transport Canada records.
Steps That Can Help Reduce Confusion
When pursuing a name change, keep the official record at the centre of the process.
Helpful practices include:
- Using the applicable form for the requested transaction
- Entering the current boat information accurately
- Reviewing the proposed name carefully
- Checking information before submission
- Waiting for the applicable official process before treating the new name as final
- Updating related private records after the change is completed
If the boat has undergone other changes, separate administrative requirements may also apply. For example, physical or registry-related alterations can involve processes distinct from a request to change the boat’s name.

Frequently Asked Questions About Renaming a Canadian Boat
Can I simply paint a new name on my boat?
Painting a new name on a boat does not necessarily change the official government record. If your boat is subject to registration requirements, follow the applicable administrative process for an official name change.
Is a name change the same as a transfer of ownership?
No. A name change and a transfer of ownership are different transactions. An owner may retain ownership while requesting a new official name for the boat.
Can I request a new port of registry with a name change?
The applicable Form 13 process can address a change of name and/or a transfer of port of registry. The request should accurately identify which change or changes you are seeking.
What if my preferred boat name is unavailable?
You may need to consider another name. Having alternative choices can be useful when the proposed name cannot be accepted through the applicable registry process.
Does a name change affect my other records?
Potentially. After the official record is updated, you may want to review insurance information, marina records, financing documents, and other records that identify the boat by its former name.
