While taking steps to replace an Ontario pleasure boat licence, owners can also make critical administrative updates to their records. If you have moved, changed phone numbers, or made physical structural modifications to your boat, these updates should be noted during the replacement process.

- Requires valid bill of sale documentation signed by the seller.
- Prevents duplicate number assignments for a single boat hull.

The Difference Between Pleasure Craft Licencing and Registration
Pleasure Craft Licencing is a mandatory identification system for recreation, whereas registration under the Small Vessel Register or Canadian Register of Vessels confers legal title. Knowing which legal framework applies to your boat ensures proper compliance with federal regulations.
It is important for boat owners to distinguish between a pleasure craft licence and formal boat registration. A licence serves primarily as an identification marker for recreational craft, allowing authorities to track ownership during safety incidents.
Conversely, boat registration renewal under Transport Canada applies to commercial craft or recreational vessels requiring registered title or mortgage recording. The National Vessel Registry Center Corp. provides forms for both licensing and official registration paths to meet varying boater requirements.
- Licensing assigns an identification number to recreational craft with 10 HP or more.
- Registration establishes formal legal title and allows mortgage recording.
- Commercial craft must utilize registration rather than simple licensing.
- Licensing does not prove legal title in high-value asset transactions.
Small Vessel Register vs. Commercial Requirements
Vessels used for commercial purposes, non-pleasure operations, or passenger transport follow separate legal standards under the Small Vessel Register. The National Vessel Registry Center Corp. provides dedicated portal paths for commercial operators who must meet distinct legal obligations beyond standard recreational licensing.
- Commercial non-pleasure craft require formal registration regardless of size.
- Registration provides an official certificate valid for operational use.
- Commercial craft must maintain different safety and inspection records.
- Small commercial vessels cannot substitute a PCL for formal registration.

- Characters must be at least 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) in height.
- Color of characters must contrast sharply with the hull background.
- Text must be written in block letters and remain clearly legible.
